THESPA: The Space of Performing Arts
Thespa is a performing arts school in New Plymouth. Dance, acro, singing, all ages. Wiggles classes for little ones too.
What stood out was the gap. The students were dancing at a level that wasn't showing up online. The brand film was about closing that gap. Becky directed it. Shaped the vision and led the piece. I shot and edited. We wanted the film to carry what we saw in the room.
The weekly piece
Before the film went out, we came on as their weekly creative partner. A couple of hours a week, helping to start piecing together creative - videos, photos, content, all with the intention of plugging that gap, and preparing the ground. The goal was to start showing what it feels like to walk through the doors at Thespa, so when the larger piece landed, it felt earned.
On the day
We worked through the junior, senior, and mini companies in blocks, making sure we had enough time with each group. The day began at 12pm wrapping at 5pm. Snacks, coffee, lights, gear, and a haze machine. Enough structure to keep moving, have fun, and start putting their skills on film.
Hannah and the team were already making reels on their own. Having that consistent presence underneath gave our work somewhere to land. It was not us replacing what they were doing. It was adding a more finished piece on top of it.
The numbers backed up the feeling
On Instagram, the film reached 17k views, 330% higher than usual. On Facebook, it reached 10k, where their usual content sits around 1.1k. 81% of the Facebook views came from people who did not already follow the school.
It did well. More than that, it helped the outside catch up with what was already happening in the room. The weekly work continues.
